Pip's Halloween Night

  1. A purple bat hangs upside down from a branch of a big autumn oak tree under a huge golden moon.

High up in the old oak tree lived a little bat called Pip. Pip slept all day, upside down, with his wings wrapped round him like a blanket. When the moon came up, he gave a big yawn, a big stretch, and a very small squeak. "Good evening, world!"

  2. Pip the bat hangs upside down from a drooping sunflower above a field of glowing jack-o'-lanterns.

Tonight was Halloween, and the pumpkin patch below was glowing with little lanterns. Pip flew down for a closer look and landed upside down on a sunflower. "Everything looks much sillier this way," he giggled.

  3. Pip meets Hazel the hedgehog, who holds a small pumpkin lantern that has gone out, in the pumpkin patch.

Then Pip heard a tiny sniffle. It was Hazel the hedgehog, holding a pumpkin lantern that had gone out. "I can't see the path home," she said, "and my prickles are getting chilly."

  4. Pip listens with his big ears, sound waves around them, while Hazel waits and a snail sits nearby.

"Don't worry," said Pip. "I don't need a lantern. I can hear my way around!" He wiggled his big ears and listened. Squeak... squeak... "That way is the stream, and this way is a very sleepy snail."

  5. Pip, Hazel, an owl, a squirrel and two mice arrive at Hazel's cosy home under a blackberry bush, where a candle glows.

Pip led Hazel past the stream, round the mushroom ring, and under the blackberry bush. On the way, Owl, Squirrel and two little mice joined in, because a walk with friends is the best kind of walk. Soon they reached Hazel's cosy home, and her family had a fresh candle for her pumpkin.

  6. Pip lands upside down in an acorn pie at the Halloween picnic while the owl, squirrel, hedgehogs and mice laugh.

"Thank you, Pip!" said Hazel. "Will you come to our Halloween picnic every year?" Pip was so happy he did a loop-the-loop and landed upside down, right in the acorn pie. Everyone laughed, and Pip laughed loudest of all.
